Melissa McGrath, DVM (surgical intern)
Dr. McGrath grew up in Staten Island, NY where her love of working with animals began with dog obedience and agility training. She moved to New Brunswick, NJ in 2002 for her undergraduate training at Rutgers University, where she majored in Animal Science with a concentration in pre-veterinary studies. Dr. McGrath was a member of a cooperative living group, Helyar House, where she was involved with several community service activities. She was also actively involved on the research farm on Cook Campus and several student clubs.
Upon graduation in 2006, Dr. McGrath moved to the Caribbean island of St. Kitts to attend veterinary school at Ross University. She was actively involved in the American Animal Hospital Association and intramural volleyball. While living in St. Kitts, Melissa adopted a "Coconut Retriever", Lulu, a local mixed breed dog.
Dr. McGrath completed her clinical studies at North Carolina State University School of Veterinary Medicine and officially graduated from Ross University in May 2010. She continued her veterinary education as a general medicine and surgical intern at VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Connecticut over the following year. During this time, Dr. McGrath had great exposure to emergency and critical care, surgery, neurology, cardiology, and internal medicine cases.
Dr. McGrath became a part of the Hickory Veterinary Hospital team in July 2011 as a surgical intern. Her goal is to obtain a surgical residency.
Dr. McGrath currently lives in Norristown, PA with her fiancé', Will, her two mixed breed dogs Lulu and Riley, and her two chinchillas, Saki and Kinji. She likes to read and watch movies in her spare time, and enjoys working with all owners and their pets in the hospital!
